About Me

My professional journey began with the New York City Department of Correction on Rikers Island, where I served as a Uniformed Correction Officer for ten years. This role honed my skills in overseeing the care, custody, and control of prisoners, maintaining safety and security, and managing inmate activities. My ability to handle high-pressure situations and ensure the wellbeing of inmates and staff alike has been a cornerstone of my career. As President and Chief Commanding Officer of the Correction Officers Benevolent Association (COBA) from 1995 to 2016, I led one of the largest law enforcement unions in New York City. Managing a team of executive board members, delegates, and support staff, I was responsible for negotiating seven collective bargaining agreements, passing over 35 pieces of legislation, and establishing initiatives such as the Rikers Central Arrest Unit. My role required extensive interaction with city council members, senators, and governors, enhancing my skills in public speaking, negotiation, and legislative advocacy. My tenure also included coordinating disaster relief efforts, directing operations after the 9/11 attacks, and implementing annual training programs for union delegates. These experiences have equipped me with exceptional organizational, strategic planning, and leadership abilities. In addition to my union leadership, I have served on the Board of the Presidential Commission on the Future of the USPS and as Commissioner of Public Safety and Security for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. These roles involved advocating for employee benefits, implementing safety improvements, and enhancing community outreach. My commitment to community awareness is further demonstrated by my work as a radio host on WWRL 1600 AM and WBLS 107.5 FM, where I created platforms for correction officers to engage with public officials and promoted outreach events.Throughout my career, I have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Union Leader of the Year and Man of the Year from the NAACP, and have been a frequent guest speaker on various media platforms.I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to bring my extensive experience and dedicated work ethic to assist in enhancing your cooperationand future endeavors. I look forward to discussing how my background, skills, and achievements align with the needs of your team.
