Mike Benz is the Executive Director of Foundation for Freedom Online (FFO), a nonprofit watchdog dedicated to protecting digital liberties and restoring the free and open Internet.   During the Trump administration, Benz was in charge of the cyber portfolio for the US State Department, where he served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Communications and Information Technology. That role included formulating and negotiating US policy on Internet diplomacy issues as well as interfacing with private industry and civil society in the Big Tech space.   Prior to his State Department role, Benz served as a White House speechwriter for President Trump and advised on technology policy. Before his time in the public sector, Benz practiced business law as an attorney in New York, representing technology companies and financial firms.

Hursti’s career started in the mid-1980s developing secure communication protocols and technologies to protect information and security systems at the national security level. He was the co-founder of the first pan-European internet service provider EUNet. Since 2005, he has been briefing and advising law and policy makers and national and local governments on cybersecurity and critical infrastructure in the United States, ASEA and elsewhere. Hursti is advising multiple companies in security technologies, identity management, cryptography, and applications of digital biotech. He’s also advising and conducting security trainings and assessments of critical infrastructure with multiple countries around the world. Hursti is a co-founder and co-organizer of DEF CON Voting Village. DEF CON is one of the world's largest and most notable global security research and hacker community conventions, and held annually in Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S. The HBO documentary film Hacking Democracy (2006) featured Hursti’s successful proof-of-concept mock election hack (Hursti Hack) that altered reported results in an election machine used in the U.S. elections. His second HBO documentary Kill Chain: The Cyber War on America's Elections (2020) provided a follow-up analysis on election security. Both documentaries earned Emmy nominations.

I recently retired as a Texas Ranger Lieutenant with almost 30 years of law enforcement experience, with 15 in a leadership role. I have investigated numerous murders, to include a successfully prosecuted 1960 cold case, sexual assaults, officer-involved shootings, public corruption and instrumental in providing leadership with border security missions. I have lead drug units, major gang units, special response teams, and Texas Rangers in the “tip of the spear” of the enforcement of law that provide and improve public safety and justice for victims and victims families. I have also made valued relationships with local, State and Federal agencies and including Mexican Law Enforcement agencies in the collaboration of efforts with proven results.
