What is the biggest mistake you made? Did you get hurt? Did others? Well mine was working as a paramedic Superintendent where I failed to ensure the safety of my staff who were on a dock trying to resuscitate a scuba diver in cardiac arrest. The dock collapsed due under the weight of all the first responders attempting to help. I learned an important lesson that day. My job wasn't to help with the resuscitation. It was to ensure the safety of those who were doing the work. I wanted to help,they were my colleagues and friends, but they didn't need my help. They needed someone to step back and watch over them. I have worked in emergency services for 13 years, starting my career off as a paramedic, transitioning to a leadering role within the paramedic services. During the pandemic I assumed an emergency management role and in 2023 I left my full time job paramedic job transitioning to Occupational Health, Safety and Emergency Management in a mental health hospital.
