About Me

Dave boasts over four decades of diverse experience as an educator, performer, author, clinician, private instructor, and bandleader. He's authored seventeen acclaimed electric bass instructional books, such as the highly regarded "Total Jazz Bassist," "Complete Electric Bass Method," "Total Funk Bass," and "Shredding Electric Bass," all published by Alfred Publishing. Recently, Dave crafted the bass curriculum for the renowned School of Rock, comprising a comprehensive five-book series. Furthermore, he's produced three comprehensive electric bass instructional DVDs, distributed by Alfred Music. Dave also co-crafted the bass curriculum for WorkshopLive.com, contributing 60 streaming video lessons to the program. From 1983 to 2011, Dave held the esteemed position of Director of the Bass Guitar Department at the National Guitar Workshop. He also penned bass instructional columns for Bass Guitar Magazine in the UK from 2002 to 2006. Dave's performance credits span a spectrum of jazz and rock luminaries, including Pat Metheny, Stanley Clarke, Mike Stern, Lee Ritenour, and John Abercrombie, among others. Rock icons like Paul Gilbert, Trey Anastasio, and Zak Wylde also grace his list of collaborators, alongside blues legends Ronnie Earl and Sonny Landreth. Beyond collaborations, Dave has released two original studio albums, "In the Pocket" and "2 Hot To Touch," available on various platforms like Amazon, iTunes, and Spotify. Educationally, Dave pursued jazz electric bass and arranging studies at Berklee College of Music, earning a Bachelor's degree in Jazz Performance from Western CT State University. Since 1996, he has served as Director of Music and Head of Jazz Studies at Canterbury School, New Milford, CT. In this role, Dave directs ensembles across jazz, rock, and pop genres, while also teaching courses in music production, theory, jazz improvisation, and offering private instruction in electric bass, upright bass, and electric-acoustic guitar.
